THE FLANGE The Flange is a 24" x 36" lithographic reproduction (ink on paper) from the original image that was shot in 1991 in Ashland, Kentucky. A diesel fuel and gasoline mixture is gravity-fed into the vertical pipe that can be seen behind the massive wall of flame. The mixture is then lit as it exits through the metal flange (at the center of the flames) and then fire crews practice pushing back the fire, heat and smoke using four, inch-and-three-quarter hoses. The goal is to turn off a small valve at the base of the flames in order to stop the flow of the burning mixture. The image became famous after it was published on the cover of a book, Fire & Emergency Law Casebook, by Thomas Schneid.
